About Me

Hey, how’s it going?

My name is Benjamin Markus, and I’m a 32-year-old graduate of the University of Florida.  I go by Ben, but many of my good friends call me Benny.  I’m originally from Miami, and I spent four years in Schenectady, NY, going to school at Union College (go Dutchmen!).

About three years ago I decided that I’d had enough of being inactive and lazy, and I vowed, for the third or fourth or twelfth time in my life, to start running.  Only this time, I took off the watch, ignored distance and took it one day at a time – my goal was, and still is, to get outside and run, whether it be three feet or three miles.

Here I am, three years later, still running.  And my running fever has only gotten hotter – part of the reason I wanted to create Run Gainesville.

Running Gainesville all the way from Boulder, CO!

Of course, I have other interests aside from running.

I would consider myself first and foremost a musician; I have played the guitar since I was 9.  My favorite bands, if you’re curious, are Phish and The Grateful Dead, but I’m really not too much a hippie =)

Here I am playing with my band: Beach Blvd.

I’m also a writer/journalist.  Here’s a short profile piece I wrote for the Independent Florida Alligator while studying at UF.

I’m also a hardcore NFL and Miami Dolphins fan, and I also cheer for the Miami Heat and the Florida Miami Marlins.

That’s about if for now…

Feel free to friend me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter.

  1. Hey Ben! Awesome blog. I gave you a follow on Twitter to see your upcoming posts. I’m going to apply your running tips to Texas. Stay hydrated and injury free! – Lee

Thanks so much, Lee! I was in Austin about 3 years ago, before I began running, but I could definitely see it as a great place to run. Keep up the good work on your blog, too. It looks like you’re doing great.

By the way, a very good friend also has a gluten-free blog – if you want to check it out: http://nograinnopain.wordpress.com/

Benjamin… Nice blog, buddy! Glad you got into running. Can we give eachother a blog shoutout on eachother’s blogroll? I started one for spinning music, and since both blogs are about working out, I think a lot of people who check out our pages would benefit from one another’s blog! check it out, http://www.spinmuse.com 🙂

    Stay grateful,
    amanda bucci 🙂

Thanks, Amanda! Sure, let’s give each other a shoutout. Neat idea for a blog… I’ve never been spinning, I’ll have to give that a try.

      Peace + Love,

Hi Ben. Cool blog. Maybe I’ll get back into running sometime. Tall Paul’s was fun, eh?

      Hey Anna,

Thanks for checking it out, and you should – Gainesville is a great place to start running again.
I had a good time Friday, thanks for hanging out. Let’s do it again sometime.

    Hi Ben,

I would like to share this event to you and your followers. I know you love running and I thought of sharing this to you.

Zozi is giving away free tickets to the Bubble Palooza. This a 3 Mile Run of Getting Blasted By A Bubbly Rainbow! Runners run through walls of colored bubbles and will look like human sherbet when they are done!

Can you let your fellow runners know about this? Zozi is buying tickets from us and giving them away for free for a limited time.

Here is where people can get their free tickets:

Please let us know if you can let your runners know about the free tickets.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you,

    Marty Lee Parker

I am moving there in July. I was just wondering if there are any common places people run in the morning (5amish)? Just want to be around some other people. Currently where I am at now there is only one neighboorhood that you can run at in the AM (in NC). Thanks

    • Hi Danielle – good question. I see people running on/around campus (UF) at that time. Also down SE 2nd Avenue – between campus and downtown. I think of Gainesville as being pretty runner-friendly, so I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding places to run early in the morning.
